The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit! Everyone is now enjoying the incredible run of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe at the 2024 US Open. It’s the first time since 2005 that the two American men will take on each other in the SF of the US Open. So it’s obvious to be excited if you’re an American tennis fan. We saw Jannik Sinner’s match against Jack Draper get scheduled at 3 pm to put the Fritz-Tiafoe match in the prime evening slot (7 pm). Although this move resulted in a bit of criticism about “blatant favoritism” towards American players, there are some tennis bigwigs like Jon Wertheim who have started to expose the ‘double standards’ of the USTA.
Recently, the renowned tennis journalist put a post on his X handle stating, “Seriously, @usta needs to pick a consistent position here. If you want to take a victory lap for American success, great. But then don’t say ‘We are cutting the player development budget. We are not responsible for building champions.’”
For those who are unaware, Frances Tiafoe was raised at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (JTCC), a USTA regional training center in College Park Maryland. Even for Taylor Fritz, USTA played a big role in his development. He worked closely with the USTA strength and conditioning department and their head trainer, Brent Salazar to take his game to the next level in terms of fitness. Do you know Taylor Fritz’s father was also named the Team USA Developmental Coach of the Year by USTA in 2015? So, the USTA’s role in their rapid rise is quite undeniable.

However, earlier this year, USTA made some big decisions in cutting down costs for important training aspects of the players. The former ATP pro, Jose Higueras who has also helped lead the player development program for the USTA sent an email to them. In that letter, he heavily criticized USTA for the wide-ranging budget cuts and he clearly mentioned that this move would threaten to undo the progress of the last 10-12 years. Taylor Fritz is among those players who Higueras and his team developed throughout the years.
Both Fritz and Tiafoe have often said that they could never afford the coaching and training opportunities that have led to this massive success without the assistance of the USTA. There are multiple such examples in American tennis where we have witnessed little seeds growing into mighty trees. For a country that gave Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe in the ’70s and ’80s and then the likes of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, and Michael Chang in the ’90s. Andy Roddick in the early 2000s.
Can you imagine you tough it has been for them to see this decline in men’s tennis? Roddick was the last one to win a major title (2003 US Open) and now perhaps they are just a couple of steps closer to breaking that jinx. Thanks to USTA for nurturing these promising talents in their early days, however, Roddick had also once slammed USTA by bringing out the skeletons in the closet.

Andy Roddick has yet again managed to put his name in the headlines. Reason? For the first time since 2006, an American man will appear in the singles event of the US Open. This year has been full of surprises. 2024 is the first year since 2002 when neither of the ‘Big Three’ have won a major title. With their absence it seems, American men’s tennis has yet again found back its glorious days. So, it’s more like a win-win situation for the American fans at the moment. Who’ll be the one to clinch the title after almost 21 years, Taylor Fritz or Frances Tiafoe?
Time will tell, but now as we are talking a bit about the controversies surrounding USTA let’s take a look at one of Roddick’s comments on them. In April 2024, Andy Roddick brutally slammed the USTA by bringing out the downside of working with them. During his podcast, he spoke about the email sent by Higueras on the USTA’s budget cuts.
Roddick said, “For a long time it felt like the USTA was happy to… they wanted to give credit to the logo and not the flag.” He revealed how despite him being world number 1 in juniors, there wasn’t any involvement from anyone from the USTA side. Andy Roddick further questioned them saying, “They say we help players. How do you help players? We go and watch all the matches. I don’t know how that helps me.“
He claimed that USTA gave him a proposal in which they said they pay for all his training expenses and traveling but he just needs to work with one of their coaches. Andy Roddick was literally taken aback by this suggestion that time! What are your thoughts on the controversies surrounding USTA?
