The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is just around the corner, but controversy is already swirling around the golf world. Recently, US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick spoke out against the DP World Tour’s partnership with the PGA Tour and his words are sparking heated debate.
Fitzpatrick is still fuming about the European Tour’s partnership with the PGA Tour. So, what’s behind his frustration? Last year’s BMW PGA Championship left a sour taste in his mouth. PGA Tour players received invitations to participate, leaving out certain European Tour players who had worked energetically to maintain their playing privileges. Fitzpatrick’s criticism of the European Tour’s partnership with the PGA Tour centers around fairness and respect. He believes European Tour players should take priority in their own events, especially flagship tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship.
“I thought that was absolutely absurd that, that even went through,” he said. However, the golfer is quite content with the format of the upcoming tournament, as he participates for the 10th time. Fitzpatrick feels familiar with the layout and doesn’t need to put in as much preparation and notes that the setup differs from a major championship like the Open, creating a more relaxed atmosphere.
“I think this is my tenth time playing this tournament. So had a lot of experience at the Old Course. Don’t feel I need to put as much effort in because I know what’s going on. Obviously the setup is a little different to an Open Championship-type setup. More relaxed, which is nice,” said the golfer in an interview with the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
This is a developing story…
